September 19 – 21, 2014 Prospect Village, Nova Scotia
Includes light supper Friday night, continental breakfast and vegetarian lunch on Saturday and Sunday.
Learn to approach your existing artistic practice from a new perspective.
Our goal will be to wake up the senses and strengthen our ability to perceive directly while working. Our goal is not necessarily to create finished work, but to experience particular methods to take back to your own studio. Engaging with material in both two and three dimensions, we will cultivate awareness, enliven the senses and create opportunities for insight to arise.
The workshop is suitable for visual artists who paint, sculpt, photograph or work in mixed media. Foundation skills will be revisited with a new approach.
Nova Scotia is a magical place to experience the autumn season. Both rugged and full of culture, it offers great variety for the senses and ample opportunity to “press reset” on your state of mind.
Working with the Body
We will use the body as a tool for developing curiosity. Walking and stillness will be our practices to prepare the ground for artmaking.
Working with the mind
Using older traditions of training the mind we will also incorporate contemporary perspectives in neuroscience to tease out new ways of seeing. Contemplation fosters additional ways of knowing that complement the traditional method of visual arts education.
Working with materials
Working in both two dimensions and three dimensions, using traditional materials and some alternative materials we will make this an opportunity to stretch your existing envelope of skills that are shared across the mediums.
There is a moderate amount of physical activity in this workshop including some walking on uneven terrain. Solid shoes are required, this is not sandal territory. Many of the materials will be supplied, but a short list of things to bring will be forwarded. If you are traveling by air we would be happy to order in any supplies you need so that they are waiting for you when you arrive.
